Listed library LED lighting, Bullers Wood School for Girls, Chislehurst
Old fluorescent battens replaced with warm LED uplighting in the library at Bullers Wood School for Girls in Chislehurst, a Grade II* listed house with an original Morris and Company painted ceiling.
A room that needed a careful hand.
Bullers Wood School for Girls is built around Bullers Wood House, a Grade II* listed Victorian house remodelled by Ernest Newton in 1889. Its library still has the original hand-painted ceiling by Morris and Company. The room was uplit by fluorescent battens sitting on top of the wall panelling, which gave a cold, patchy light, were costly to run and needed regular tube changes. The school wanted warmer, even light that shows off the ceiling, with the work done carefully in a historic room.
What we did.
- Removed the old fluorescent battens from the top of the panelling around the library
- Fitted warm white LED uplighting in their place, running continuously round the room
- Kept the light source hidden behind the cornice, so you see the glow and not the fittings
- Took the light round every corner, return and window bay for an even wash with no dark gaps
- Worked with care around the listed panelling and the painted ceiling
- Tested the circuits and handed over the certification
The result.
A warmer, brighter library that shows off its Morris and Company ceiling, uses far less energy than the old fluorescent tubes and needs much less maintenance.
