A multimeter used to trace an electrical fault

Electrical fault finding.

Breakers that keep tripping, sockets that have stopped working, lights that flicker. We find the cause, not just the symptom, and fix it properly.

Find it, fix it, prove it.

An RCD that trips is doing its job. It is telling you something on that circuit is leaking current. Resetting it and hoping is not a fix. The cause can be anything from a faulty appliance or water in an outdoor socket to a nail through a cable.

We test methodically, circuit by circuit, to find the fault. Then we fix it and test again, so you know it is genuinely sorted.

Faults we trace every week

  • RCDs or breakers that trip, sometimes or all the time
  • Sockets or lights that have stopped working
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Warm sockets, switches or plugs
  • A burning smell with no obvious cause
  • Faults that appear after rain or in cold weather

What's included.

Methodical testing

Insulation resistance and continuity testing to pin down the fault.

Appliance checks

We rule out faulty appliances, the most common cause of RCD trips.

Repair

Damaged cables, loose connections and failed accessories put right.

Outdoor faults

Water damaged outdoor sockets, lights and garden circuits.

Written findings

A clear explanation of what was wrong and what we did.

Why faults hide.

Intermittent faults are the hardest. A fault that only shows up when it rains, or when the heating comes on, can take some patience to trace. Telling us when it happens, what was switched on and what you have already tried helps us find it faster.

If the fault turns out to be a sign of a bigger problem, such as old wiring breaking down, we will tell you plainly and give you options, rather than patching something that will fail again.

Questions about fault finding.

Why does my RCD keep tripping?

The most common causes are a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor socket or light, or damaged cable. Unplugging everything on that circuit and resetting it is a good first check.

Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker?

Not if it trips again straight away. Leave it off and get it checked. A breaker that trips is protecting you.

Why have half my sockets stopped working?

Often a tripped RCD or breaker, but it can also be a loose connection at one socket breaking the circuit. Do not keep using a socket that feels warm or smells of burning.

Can you find a fault that comes and goes?

Yes, though intermittent faults can take longer. A note of when it happens helps a lot.
